Crazy Horse Laws

Here are some crazy horse laws.  No one has any idea how these got there and no living soul has a recollection of anyone arrested under them.  Happy reading.

In Pattonsburg, Missouri, according to the Revised Ordinances dated 1884:  "No person shall yell, shout, bawl, scream, use profane language, dance, sing, whoop, quarrel, or make any unusual noise or sound in such manner as to disturb the horse."

In Cotton Valley, Louisiana - Beware ice cream lovers!:  "Citizens are not allowed to eat an ice cream cone while on horseback in public places."

In Burdonville, Vermont, it states that:  "No horses are allowed to roam loose between March 1st and October 20th."

If you happen to have an accident in Hortonville, New York, remember this law:  "The rider of any horse involved in an accident resulting in death shall immediately dismount and give his name and address to the person killed."

Here's a misworded ordinance in Wolf Point, Montana:  "No horse shall be allowed in public without its owner wearing a halter."

In Hartsville, Illinois, you can be arrested for riding an ugly horse.

Horses are not allowed to be heard neighing after 10PM in Pocataligo, Georgia.

If you know of any other strange horse laws, feel free to add to these.

Brigita,

These are pretty funny.  It always cracks me up to see old laws that are still on the books.  Some of them are just down right crazy!

We have some odd laws here in PA but I'm not sure about horse laws. The one about the ice cream cracks me up! You have to wonder how that came about!

How very funny.

I am sure I have broken most of the horse laws.

Not sure if we have any far out laws regarding horses.....will check it out.

Thanks for sharing.

Enjoyed reading.

Lawmakers really need to consider making better use of their time.  LOL

In Aiken Horses are forbidden in the kitchen at The Westside Bowery and in parts of texas bartenders may refuse service to a person on a horse in their bar.

Joshua & Kathy:

They are funny!  LOL  I would love to find out how these laws came about.

wow - these are some crazy laws.

I have to wonder with the 'ugly horse' law ----  who gets to decide what ugly is??   Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Howdy Brigita, here's a few more you might like:

The quiet little community of Wilbur, Washington, prohibits their residents to ride "an ugly horse in any public place". The penalty of violating this old law? Merely a fine of $300 and a possible six month jail sentence

The city of Omaha, Nebraska, retains an old law which requires a hitching post must be found in the front yard of every house!

  • Shelby, North Carolina has a ban on giving a horse chewing tobacco, or even a dip of snuff!
  • Montauk, Missouri, won't allow riders to eat garlic four hours prior to mounting their horse, nor can you give any garlic to your horse under any circumstances!

Sorry, about that, I thought I was logged in when I gave you my comment !! But here are even a couple more funny ones:

In New York City, it is illegal to open or close an umbrella in the presence of a horse.

Tennessee prohibits riders from lassoing fish.

Horses are required to wear hats in hot weather in Rasario, Argentina.

Brigita - These are some pretty funny laws.  I'm glad I don't have to worry about my horse neighing after 10p.m.

Those are good ones!  I have to admit I am guilty of feeding my horse garlic, at least in the summertime.

My horse was guilty of that.  He neighed at couple of times after 10PM.  Besides, I haven't figured out how to train a horse not to neigh.  LOL

Brigita, very funny, these must have been written in the days horses were our primary transportation.  As far as the umbrella goes, my horses are always scared when I am in their veiw with an umbrella.

    Christine:

I have no clue when they were written, but they are very funny no matter when they were passed.

Now, remember to wear your halter when your horse is in public.  LOL

How funny. I especially love the one about horses not being allowed to neigh after 10 PM - and the one about owners needing to wear a halter!

Posted by Candice Reinke (Old Towne Realty) about 1 year ago

Ok I want the first one enforced!!!  They spook at the STUPIDEST things!!

In Hartsville, Illinois, you can be arrested for riding an ugly horse.  I agree with this one--some of those horses are butt ugly.  Mine of course are beautiful . . lol  hehheheheheheh

It makes sense to have the first one as a law.  I know some horses spook at a variety of things.  But, then there are those that don't care about anything but eating.  LOL

That is a good looking paint you have there.  :-)
