Using Horse Sense in So Many Ways
As many of my readers know, I have a passion for horses. I have loved horses ever since I can remember. As an adult, I have put my passion to good use to help others. Yes, I do use it in my real estate business to assist Buyers and Sellers in their real estate needs, but I do use my horse sense in other ways, too.
For starters, I am a volunteer with the Northampton County, PA 4H. Have been for over 25 years. I am the leader of a 4H club where I put my horse knowledge to use. I teach the children, ages 8 - 18 years of age about horses. Using mostly hands on learning, I teach about horsemanship and basics about horses, stressing safety around horses. Many of these lessons also teach the members about leadership and life lessons. It is such a pleasure to hear from the members when they are adults with families of their own and in the work force, come up to me to say thank you for what I did. I feel I accomplished what I set out to do, not to mention having fun while doing it.
In addition to 4H, I volunteer a few hours a week at Equi-librium. This is a therapeutic riding center that helps many with special needs from the age of 2 all the way up to senior adults. My job is horse leader. I am in charge of getting the horse ready for the student, as well as taking care of it after the lesson, and leading the horse and being in control of it while the instructor works with the student during the lesson. I enjoy seeing the progress these students make in so many different ways.
Since I have many more years of experience with horses and have taught beginner riders in the past, from time to time, I make some suggestions to the instructor on other teaching methods if a student has difficulty understanding the particular lesson. She (the instructor) is so grateful for my help and learning experience.
Volunteering at various horse events is another way I help the horse community. The time spent volunteering is more like a day off for me because I enjoy doing it and I find it to be relaxing.
Overall, volunteering has benefited not only those that I help, but also me with relaxation, new lessons learned, joy and peace of mind.
