Equine Rescue Organizations

I was judging stadium jumping at a local unrecognized event.  A non-profit organization, Helping Hooves Equine Rescue, Inc., had a table set up to get word out about their cause.  Let me tell you a little about them.

Helping Hooves Equine Rescue is run by all volunteers.  They are one of many rescue orgnizations that help rehabilitate neglected and abused horses that have been placed in their care.  They also have a mission to educate the public to stop horse abuse.  Some own horses and have no knowledge about horse care and therefore need to know what to do with their equine friends.  Horses need attention and TLC like any cat or dog.  Just because they are large animals and, yes, some are wild, they cannot just be left out in the field to fend for themselves.  We need to check on them to make sure they are healthy and injury free.  Horses are very friendly animals and most enjoy being being in our company (grooming, hand grazing, riding, etc.).

Visiting the horses

There are many ways the public can help the equine rescue organizations.  They can help by:

  • Becoming a member of the organization to join their cause
  • Making a donation  Donations go toward recovering the cost to save horses that have been rescued and placed in their care.  Material donations are also accepted, such as blankets, grain, hay, bedding, etc.
  • Volunteering  There are many different volunteer jobs you can do to help.  Any amount of time you can give is appreciated.
  • Adopting  Why not help by giving a rescued horse a second chance.  They can give you years of pleasure.
  • Sponsoring a Horse  If you are unable to adopt, you can still help by sponsoring a horse.  All money is spent on helping that horse.  Sponsors are encouraged to visit their sponsored horses (at set times).

If you love horses, but you cannot own one for one reason or another, consider doing any of the above mentioned ways of helping the equine rescue organizations.  It is a worthy cause and you can still spend time with horses without the expense of owning one.

Hi Brigita,

Good cause for all of us to support.  Youmay also want to check out:    www.BitsandBitesFarm.com   They are a thoroughbred rescue and retraining organization.  More of a professional retraining operation so that ex-race horses can move on to non-racing second careers.

Thanks, Bill!

I know there are many different horse rescue organizations.  They are all a worthy cause.

Brigita, a client friend of ours has been spearheading horse rescue operations here in NM for years. She's done really well with finding homes for the adoptable ones.

Laura, it is really nice to know that the rescued horses are able to get a second chance through adoption.  At least they are not suffering and are getting the attention and care they deserve.

Brigita, horse rescue is a worthy cause.  However, just as a heads up, always check out any rescue operation thoroughly before donating to them - like anything else where the heartstrings are concerned, con men exist in that area, as well.

Plus, there are "collectors" that take in way more horses than they can handle, with predictable and heartbreaking results.  We had just such a case recently here in Texas, with people who had sent their beloved elderly horses (and some not so elderly) to a recognized and well-known rescue person, only to see them on the news, skin an bones, being loaded after being confiscated from this woman's facility - an those were the lucky ones.  It's made me even more concerned that people look first, jump after.

I agree, Tricia.  Like with anything else these days, you have to be careful about contributing or donating to these organizations.  You need to do your homework first.  What would be a great idea is to drop in to the facility unannounced and see first hand how it is run and how the horses are taken care of.  And, on your visit, talk to some of the volunteers.  They're the ones that will be the most truthful.

I bought two PMU babies 2 years ago from the New York Horse Rescue.  They are so quiet and well behaved.  They are now three.  I have never had one inch of trouble with them and their conformation and willingness is amazing.  If you are looking for a good horse - look into your local horse rescue.  There are many diamonds in the rough there.

 Good Luck!

You'd be surprised at the different horses you can adopt.  There are some horses that have been adopted that have made it to the Grand Prix level.  (This includes the Chincoteague  ponies.)  All you need to do is check out the rescues.  There are some good horses there that may be suitable for what you are looking for and waiting for a second cahnce at another job.
